Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for R&D collaboration, involving the exploitation of patented technologies and research strengths of both parties to develop impactful innovations. The two parties will also work jointly to commercialize their R&D deliverables in promoting the development of Smart City, bringing more positive impacts to various industries.

Under this MoU, Intellectual Property (IP) generated from R&D collaborations between HKUST and ASTRI will be jointly owned by both parties based on their respective inventive contributions. This is the first time in Hong Kong that an applied research institute and a university have formally collaborated using this approach, setting an example in driving more interdisciplinary R&D collaborations involving sharing technology transfers to advance research. ecosystem of innovation and technology in Hong Kong. and beyond.

Under the new agreement, ASTRI and HKUST or its affiliates will proactively identify joint research opportunities by leveraging the intellectual properties respectively owned by each organization and drive the commercialization of these research deliverables. Potential areas of cooperation include, among others, research into advanced 5G applications, third-generation semiconductors, as well as the use of sensors for sorting waste.

While the two organizations will complement each other in basic and applied research, ASTRI will further strengthen its role as a bridge between basic research and industrial applications. Through this collaboration, both parties also aim to cultivate I&T talents, including young researchers and graduate students, by providing them with more opportunities to participate in R&D projects.

To date, ASTRI holds approximately 900 patents in the continent, the United States and other countries, and has transferred nearly 800 technologies to industry. His applied research spans five technology areas, including AI and big data analytics; Communications; Cybersecurity, cryptography and trust technologies; Circuits and integrated systems; as well as IoT and sensors. ASTRI is committed to creating technology innovations that solve business problems and improve operational efficiency for private and public sector organizations.

HKUST is committed to promoting technological innovation and knowledge transfer. In 2020/2021, HKUST disclosed 176 inventions, filed 332 new patent applications and obtained 205 new patents. HKUST has approximately one thousand cumulative active issued patents in fields spanning biotechnology, robotics and autonomous systems, information and communication technologies, artificial intelligence, semiconductors to advanced materials and technologies. durable.

ASTRI and HKUST will continue to explore opportunities for similar collaborations with other R&D institutions and universities in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, to support the Greater Bay Area’s transformation into an international center for innovation and technology, as outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan. .

ASTRI’s CEO said that HKUST and ASTRI each have strong R&D capabilities and both possess a large number of valuable patented technologies.
